THESEUS - New Internet-based knowledge
The THESEUS programme is aimed at services and knowledge infrastructures for the Internet of the future. To this end, research is being carried out into innovative base technologies such as the automatic
recognition of content and semantic relationships and contexts, and forwardlooking application scenarios are being developed for cultural assets andvarious industrial market segments such as mechanical engineering and the
medical sector. Linking different innovative approaches will enable new quality in the access and use of knowledge and services in the context of Web 3.0 - Internet of Services. Key development areas are:
The programme, in which 29 companies and academic institutions are
participating, consists of one key area for researching base technologies (Core
Technology Center) and 6 application areas (Use Cases).
The 2008 THESEUS TALENT ideas competition enabled young academics,
students and freelance developers to bring their creativity and programming
skills to the THESEUS development. There were four awards for successfully
responding to specific issues in the THESEUS area.
The programme is being supplemented by the 2009 THESEUS SME funding
initiative which is particularly aimed at small and medium-sized companies.
Based on previous findings, SMEs will, under THESEUS, be able to run their
own projects from 2009 onwards.
Associated academic research commissioned by the Federal Ministry of
Economics and Technology (BMWi) is contrasting the technologies and
applications developed under THESEUS with comparable initiatives in the
European and international field, and linking THESEUS consortium partners
with international partners and initiatives. The agency responsible for the
associated research is the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems
Technology ISST.
